These ideas gained widespread currency in England, particularly at a time when few traveled to Africa itself. For the newspaper-reading public in both Europe and Egypt, for visitors to the free lectures at geographic societies, or for strollers through the exotic panoramas of international world exhibi- tions, central and East African territories unofficially bore the imprint of Livingstone's illustrious name and reputation.
