In October 1960 a committee under the chairmanship of Mr Muse H. I. Galal, the distinguished authority on Somali poetry, was set up to recommend the most suitable script for the mother-tongue. The Committee's recommendations favoured the use of a Roman orthography, but no decision was taken by the government of the Republic at the time.
