Having noted how the attitude of the Muslim majority had now hardened towards independence since the initial euphoria of May, Delouvrier remarked: "Mon général, Algeria will be independent." At which de Gaulle is said to have waved him aside with, "In twenty-five years, Delouvrier, in twenty-five years…."
