French Algerian war casualties rivaled peacetime road accident rates. [fact]

According to French figures, their forces lost 17,456 dead (including no less than 5,966 killed “accidentally”, and 892 officers killed in action); 64,985 wounded and injured, and 1,000 missing (including deserters). Far less severe than American casualties in Vietnam, the French casualty rate during most of the war ran at lower than that claimed by road accidents in France.
