Undocumented black immigrants face converging racism and xenophobia. [fact]
While popular concern about and advocacy for the 11.3 million undocumented individuals in the United States centers almost exclusively on Latinx communities, the Center for American Progress reported that in 2012, there were approximately 400,000 undocumented black immigrants without legal status. A sizable portion of this population is Muslim, coming from Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, and other African countries. Immediately upon entry into the United States, they become subject to the converging animus of anti-black racism and xenophobia, and the perpetual threat of arrest and deportation.
XREF: Counteracts the near-exclusive focus on Latinx undocumented communities, an angle worth noting for migration-justice coverage.
