Children's rights emerged from Vienna's democratic socialist education reforms [fact]
At the core of this democratic socialist experiment was the radical new idea that children were not mere appendages of their parents, nor were their futures predestined by their class, nor should the goal of education be an indoctrination in obedience or the preparation of poor children for lives of servitude. Based on breakthroughs in the understanding of children's complex inner lives (this was Freud's hometown), Viennese policy makers adopted the belief that children had rights of their own and that the role of education was to unlock their full potential.
