Familiarity can become frightening when it reappears in altered form. [definitional]

This is a head-spinning political transformation by any measure. But witnessing this about-face in someone whose face is perennially confused with my own sends a particular kind of chill; once again Freud’s description of the uncanny comes to mind: “that species of the frightening that goes back to what was once well known and had long been familiar.”

DEFINE: Freud's uncanny is defined as the frightening revival of the once-familiar — a useful definition for literary and psychological analysis. XREF: Connects to Freud's 1919 essay 'The Uncanny' and possibly to other texts the reader engages that invoke the familiar-made-strange.
