Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia follow parallel rises in Europe [connection]
Looking to the other side of the Abrahamic aisle, Goldberg chronicled the rise of anti-Semitism in contemporary Europe, and considered the ways it has mirrored the rise of Islamophobia. Goldberg also did not shrink from considering the hate crimes that have been perpetrated against European Jews, by white nationalists, by Muslim extremists, and by other groups. Near the end of the article, Goldberg tells the story of a conversation between Joe Biden and a top Israeli official, in which the Israeli confides to Biden that Jews in Israel have a secret that gives them strength in times of challenge. And the secret is “we have nowhere else to go.”
XREF: Parallels between anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim prejudice tie into broader patterns of scapegoating minority groups during periods of social anxiety.
