British Muslims form the UK's second largest religious group. [fact]
In the United Kingdom, recent census data showed that approximately 2.7 million people (or 4.8 percent of the total population) define themselves as "Muslim." This would make Muslims the second largest religious group in Great Britain after Christians (who represent 59.3 percent of the population). To break down the Muslim population a little further, a survey taken right after 9/11 showed that those of Pakistani origin made up 42.5 percent of the British Muslim population; Bangladeshis, 16.8 percent; Indians, 8.5 percent; and "other white" Muslims represented 7.5 percent of the population.
