Muslim men feel they cannot discuss religion or politics because they fear being associated. [causal]

Muslim women who wear the hijab participate in both a form of self-discipline and a rearticulation of what it means to be Muslim and American by altering their dress (such as by wearing brightly colored hijabs) and controlling their behavior in public spaces. They are cognizant of their surveillance and try to mitigate the gaze on their bodies by appearing less timid and oppressed. Muslim men feel they cannot discuss religion or politics because they fear being associated with terrorism and silenced themselves as a result.
