Muslim South Asians and Arabs are descending the racial hierarchy. [causal]

But we are not defined by just one identity but by our multiple intersecting identities, and the racial hierarchy is not static. Therefore, this book does not contend that Muslim has become a race but rather that South Asians and Arabs who are Muslims are moving down the racial hierarchy because of the racialization of their Muslim identity.

DEFINE: Clarifies the book's thesis: Muslim is not becoming a race itself, but Muslim identity is being racialized, shifting these groups downward in a non-static racial hierarchy. Builds on: "Census data collection may enable surveillance of Muslim Americans."
