Muslim women who wear the hijab are thus stuck in between a rock and a hard place. They self-surveil because they are under scrutiny, yet they also see this as an opportunity to exert their agency and redefine the meanings associated with Islam. They try desperately to contest the stereotype of a Muslim through their behavior and actions while under surveillance.
