In 1964 Hunold wrote to Röpke from a speaking tour through the U.S. Midwest that he had to change the name of one of his lectures in Peoria, Illinois. The title—"European Economic Integration"—had prompted the director of the local television station to ask, "Do you fellows have a racial problem over there too?" Hunold pointed out that people in the States were preoccupied above all "with integration and segregation." In fact, the intersection of questions of race and economic order were at the forefront of Röpke's concerns in this period.
