"Islamophobia shapes the worldbuilding of Chronicles of Riddick" [contrarian]
In Chronicles of Riddick, the monsters kill humans who do not agree to “convert” to the Necromonger religion; when they do convert, the humans kneel down in the Muslim stage of prayer known as sujud. The Grand Marshal of the Necromongers goes on a pilgrimage and returns as a monster. He lives in a Moorish-style palace where Riddick is repeatedly tortured. The Grand Marshal constantly orders captives to “convert,” “convert or fight,” or “convert or die”—some of the language in which this film reflects contemporary political discourse surrounding Islam.
SEED: Could become an essay angle: how ostensibly non-political sci-fi franchises absorb and code contemporary Islamophobic discourse into their alien religions and villains.
