I think I am beginning to understand why Charles Lindbergh spent his last decades as a passionate environmentalist; why Beryl Markham, the English writer who as a young woman learned to fly in Kenya, as an old woman became a Kenyan naturalist; and why, of course, the early astronauts knew they had transformed public consciousness of the natural environment with the first photo of the entire shimmering globe.
