The age of Drake was one of endeavour rather than success. The Elizabethans failed to find the North-east Passage, or the North-west Passage; they failed to colonize America; they did not establish a sustainable trade with the Americas, and it was not until the seventeenth century that they finally opened a firm trade with the East.
