The diffusion of industrialism has created “one world” in a more negative and threatening sense than that just mentioned—a world in which there are actual or potential ecological changes of a harmful sort that affect everyone on the planet. Yet industrialism has also decisively conditioned our very sense of living in “one world.” For one of the most important effects of industrialism has been the transformation of technologies of communication.
