Türkisch für Anfänger focuses on the challenges facing the merging of two families after a German woman marries a man of Turkish background. Each parent brings two children into the marriage. On the husband's side, there is a daughter, Yagmur, who wears a headscarf and seeks to be a devout Muslim. The show contains storylines in which Yagmur wrestles with the challenges of reconciling her Muslim and German identities, yet the show avoids a simplistic resolution. Room is left for Yagmur to be both German and Muslim.
