Many European countries still criminalize blasphemy today. [fact]
Blasphemy laws, vestiges of a Christian past, also remain on the books in many European countries. Denmark's Criminal Code threatens with punishment, including possible imprisonment, anyone who “publicly mocks or insults the religious doctrines or acts of worship of any lawfully existing religious community.” Other countries with blasphemy laws include Austria, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and Switzerland. Britain abolished its blasphemy laws in 2008.
