Mosque leaders eventually backed off the proposal. [fact]

In other minaret controversies, the fear of the call to prayer is more central. Normally, such a fear would be irrelevant since, in many localities in Europe, noise ordinances prevent the call to prayer. But, in recent years, we are seeing more allowances for it. In 2010, local authorities in Rendsburg, Germany, gave the mosque permission to issue the call to prayer on Fridays. In 2013, the Fittja Mosque in Stockholm became the first one in Sweden to receive permission to broadcast the adhan from the minaret. But there are also notable instances of resistance to such efforts. For example, when the Central Oxford Mosque proposed to broadcast the daily call to prayer from its minaret in 2007, local residents mounted a fierce opposition. Mosque leaders eventually backed off the proposal.
