New Muslim television portrayals break stereotypes even as norms persist [fact]

These shows represent the emergence of new television programming containing Muslim characters and storylines that are not confined to terrorism, violence, or the dichotomy between "good Muslim" and "bad Muslim." Television shows that traffic in Muslim stereotypes are still the norm, but these alternative representations are promising signs that popular television can play a more constructive role in how the West imagines and understands Muslims.

XREF: Connects to media representation studies and debates about stereotype-breaking in popular culture, possibly echoing Stuart Hall's work on representation. Builds on: "So-called "good Muslims" in TV dramas still reinforce stereotypes."
