Stories of Muslim women focus mostly on their oppression and status as victims. [fact]
Stories of Muslim women focus mostly on their oppression and status as victims. The stereotypical Muslim woman in the Western media is depicted as a victim of either violence or sexism (or both) at the hands of angry and misogynist Muslim men (and sometimes other women). As a victim, the Muslim woman is passive. She lacks agency and frequently even a voice. One would be hard pressed to discover Muslim women in the Western media who make choices and participate in activities that shape their own destinies. One would also have difficulty encountering the great diversity of Muslim women, with occupations including housewives, scientific researchers, and politicians, and with religious orientations ranging from Islamist to progressive.
