Swiss voters banned minarets despite government opposition in 2009 [fact]
Despite opposition to the initiative from the Swiss government and several prominent Christian religious organizations, the campaign to ban minarets succeeded in the referendum held in November 2009. A double majority was needed for the referendum to pass—a majority of voters and a majority of cantons had to approve the ban. In the end, 57.5 percent of the voters approved, as did twenty-two of twenty-six cantons.
