But do these observations mean that Islam is inherently misogynistic and that Muslim women cannot find freedom or full personhood in Islam? To conclude that Islam is by definition misogynistic is to risk promoting Islamophobia by ignoring the larger historical, political, and cultural realities both in Muslim countries and in the West. For starters, patriarchy and the oppression of women are not unique to Muslim societies or to practices within Islam. The history of Western Christianity is also one of patriarchy.
