The result is a constructed reality that reduces all Pakistani Muslims to angry militants. [definitional]

When a news network airs stories about militant Muslims in, say, Pakistan, it is choosing to highlight one slice of the Muslim community in that nation, a slice that will appease the appetites of Western audiences who are attracted to stories involving violence or conflict. But by choosing not to air stories about Pakistani Muslims who fight for women's rights or who provide health care to the poor, the network creates the impression that extremist or violent Muslims are the norm in Pakistan. When other news organizations repeat this selective coverage, the result is a constructed reality that reduces all Pakistani Muslims to angry militants.
