Western news coverage of Islam skews toward militants and extremists. [fact]
In a study by Media Tenor, 975,000 news stories pertaining to Islam in both Europe and the United States were analyzed. In 2001, only 2 percent of these stories focused on Muslim militants and extremists, but this figure jumped to 25 percent by 2011. In the same period, the percentage of stories devoted to ordinary Muslims remained at 0.1 percent—no change from 2001 to 2011. This study, combined with the other studies discussed in this section, demonstrates just how fixated the Western media is on constructing Islam as a religion prone to violence and extremism.
