An estimated 3 million Uyghurs are held in Chinese camps [fact]
The camps, called "reeducation centers" by the Chinese government, grew in size and number in 2018. Today, some estimates hold that as many as 3 million detainees may be locked away behind the impenetrable walls of 500 camps. Many inside the global Uyghur movement, including Rushan Abbas of the Campaign for Uyghurs in Washington, DC, who I marched alongside in July 2022 in front of the Chinese embassy there, believes the number could be far higher. In addition to the horrors already outlined, Uyghur Muslims are forced to learn Mandarin in an effort to excise their culture and religion, and are also compelled to perform slave-like labor that reportedly pumps out products for American and European companies, including Adidas, Hugo Boss, and Apple.
QUESTION: Numbers vary widely between estimates; detainee totals resist independent verification.
