Europe's fear of jihadists is driven by perceived civilizational conflict. [causal]

For Europe, the “Muslim world” watches and waits from nearby and from within. It pumps waves of its “foot soldiers” across the Mediterranean, ready to fight on new fronts of the same longstanding crusade. A crusade where Muslim men are perceived as armed “jihadists,” that Arabic term mangled beyond recognition, prepared to strap themselves with bombs in furtherance of the violent theater of that crusade.

DEFINE: The author notes how 'jihadist' (a mangled Arabic term) functions rhetorically, framing it as a distortion rather than accurate description.
