Governments drive ethnic cleansing campaigns to seize coveted land. [causal]
Chapter 4 moves east from the Indian subcontinent to China and Myanmar, sites of horrific ethnic cleansing against two indigenous Muslim populations. I examine the American War on Terror’s facilitation of the persecution of Uyghur Muslims in China’s disputed northwest territory, Xinjiang. In 2014, that mass persecution devolved into a full-scale elimination program encompassing mass detention, torture, and the criminalization of Islam through law and violence. I then delve into the ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, which like its Chinese counterpart is a campaign steered by the government to remove a people from land the state desperately covets.
