In August 2018, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNCHR) moved that Burmese military generals should be tried for genocide. A year later, Suu Kyi stood before the ICJ in The Hague, facing those very charges. Approximately 30,000 Rohingya were killed by the state's “clearance operations” that began in 2017, and nearly 1 million were pushed out of their homes and into the ocean.
