The prominent entrepreneur Jorge Alesssandri had been president from 1958 to 1964. His politics of "technocratic liberalism" (inflationary measures, liberalization of trade, devaluation) was frustrated by the traditional right and the "rentier protectionism" of the entrepreneurial class.
