Vergara (1985, 106–133) has carefully reconstructed the internal discussions and negotiations that led to the final document. Interestingly, nationalists, neoliberals, and the gremialistas agreed on certain key elements—notably, the "necessity" to redefine and limit democracy to a "restricted" or "protected" sphere. While many elements of Hayekian neoliberalism provided the backdrop for an understanding of the Chilean constitution, they were recombined with traditional patriarchal and authoritarian concepts of the state.
