The Salvos are best understood in contrast to the Costanzos—building contractors from Catania—who chose to remain outside customers. According to Calderone: "None of the Costanzos is formally a member. My brother told me that Enzo Costanzo had the right qualities to become one and that for a while he was undecided. But had Costanzo become a man of honor, he would have had to be introduced as such to all the other men of honor, who would have felt entitled to go directly to him in order to obtain jobs and other favors; and had he refused, he would have run the risk of being 'deposed,' no doubt losing his tranquillity" (AC: I, 248).
