When a kidnaping did occur, punishment was merciless. Vincenzo Sinagra testified that a man of about fifty, unaware of [my cousin's] relationship with the mafia, made clear to my cousin his intention, as soon as he got out [of prison], to carry out a kidnaping and asked my cousin to help. In telling me about this episode my cousin said, "This must die" [chistu 'avi a moriri], meaning that, by planning a kidnaping against the mafia's will, that man had signed his own death warrant.
