Sicilian socialists paid the mafia for votes that never came. [fact]
Enzo Leone, a socialist candidate from Marsala, no doubt regretted having paid in advance. In a recorded telephone conversation with one of his capibastone after the 1990 elections, he complains: "They are thieves; they betrayed us. First we gave them the money, but then they did not give us the promised votes" (Repubblica, October 26, 1991).
XREF: Relates to electoral corruption and mafia-political collusion, a recurring theme in studies of Sicilian politics.
