← Trust and Trustworthiness

Power inequalities fundamentally block the possibility of trust. [causal]

In general, therefore, the weaker party cannot trust the more powerful much at all. Inequalities of power therefore commonly block the possibility of trust. One might mistakenly suppose that a powerful Henry VIII is trustworthy, but this supposition cannot be grounded in a belief that a mere courtier's interests are encapsulated in Henry's interests, at least not over the long run.
