In public life, governance displaces liberal democratic-justice concerns with technical formulations of problems, questions of right with questions of efficiency, even questions of legality with those of efficacy. In the workplace, governance displaces the lateral solidarities of unions and worker consciousness and the politics of struggle with hierarchically organized “teams,” multiparty cooperation, individual responsibility, and antipolitics.
