People's mental city maps vary enormously in detail and scale [fact]

The fact that the spatial order makes the learning of locational meanings possible, does not, of course, guarantee how or if they will be learned. The size, shape, and number of the "locational maps" that city dwellers carry about in their heads obviously vary enormously from individual to individual. At one extreme is the individual for whom "the city" consists of a few well-understood streets-the surrounding area a large blank space on his single map. At the other extreme is the individual who carries in his head extremely detailed maps of locational meanings for many cities.
