The traditional model of knowledge is hierarchical: facts nest inside concepts, concepts inside disciplines, disciplines inside some master taxonomy. This model fails in practice. Real understanding doesn't live in trees — it lives in graphs. An idea becomes powerful not from its position in a hierarchy but from the number and quality of its connections to other ideas.
This is why the Zettelkasten works. It doesn't organize notes into folders (a tree); it connects them by link (a graph). The value of any single note is proportional to what it touches. An isolated insight decays. A connected insight compounds.
The implication: when learning something new, the first question shouldn't be "where does this fit?" but "what does this touch?" What prior knowledge does it modify? What claims does it support or contradict? What new questions does it open? Answering these questions is how a fact becomes knowledge. emergence
