The political dreams were different but elements remained the same: to make of them modest but respectable loyalists whose political claims would be contingent on continued denial of native rights, whose invest- ments in a racial hierarchy would remain strong, but whose sense of enti- tlement would be limited to legal European equivalency, not equal social or political status.
